Another TRON 2.0: KILLER APP Mod Update

By TronFAQ on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 1:57 AM
April 16th, 2010 UPDATE: This article is out of date. The Killer App Mod v1.1 has been released.

It's been a long time since the last update, but here is the first of a series of short videos (and possibly screenshots) showing some of the new features that will be in the next version of the mod.  More videos are to come, at a later time.

Download a high quality version of the trailer here

This video demonstrates the cutscenes, in-game geometry, and HUD, all in the proper dimensions and aspect ratios for a widescreen display at 1680x1050 resolution.  It also shows a Gold cheat integrated directly into the first level of the game . . . now for some real user power!

Due to the sheer number of updates that the mod will make to the game, from the most minor to the major, and because not all the planned features may end up in the upcoming release: the next version of the mod will likely be released as an Open Beta.  This will allow for the fact that not all features may be complete, and also to allow testing by a broad range of users, to help discover any problems that may crop up.  These issues will be dealt with in another future and final version, based on everyone's feedback.

The release of the Open Beta is tentatively scheduled to occur in the Fall of 2009. As before, no promises are made.  But we will do our best to have the next version completed by the expected timeframe.

Thanks from the LDSO and Killer App Mod teams.

For earlier updates, please read this previous article. More information can also be found on the ModDB KILLER APP Mod page.

Very excited, keep up the good work!

Quick question, though.. You say that with the tools made available from BVG, it was impossible to make new weapons. How are you doing so?

Also, is there any chance you could share with us some specifics about the new weapons and multiplayer skins? Or do we have to wait until Fall? lol

I don't think new weapons were ever promised. The closest thing to that which I previously mentioned, was that there might be new multiplayer arms in a future version of the mod. So that we aren't always looking at Jet's arms for every character. People sometimes refer to these as the "weapon arms".

As for not being able to create new weapons with what BVG and Monolith gave us: that still holds true. We weren't given enough information and code to make it possible.

I'm talking about creating a completely new type of weapon . . . not just taking an existing one, changing its appearance, and trying to pass it off as something new. (And even that can't be done with what they gave us, either.) Maybe with enough time, and lots of trial and error, a way can be found. But by then, everyone will have moved on to the upcoming TR2N game anyway.

For skins, not a lot has changed since the previous version except that they'll be higher quality. The only thing is that Kain-Xavier has been creating new skins for the LOL and Rod Primitive, to match his characters.

I've added a link to allow downloading of a high quality version of the trailer.

Unless you watch the trailer in high quality, you may not notice the difference between before and after with widescreen.

    Very nice !

I am looking forward to it. Especially the widescreen part !

Soooo.... Think maybe we can at least have the older mod back? Since it looks like the new update might never make it any time soon? =]

Keep up the great work guys!

I'm experiencing difficulty with my internet connection right now, so I won't be able to update this site, or visit the Tron sites as much as I'd like to, for a little while. I'm just doing a quick reply here today.

@Nar78: No, the old version of the mod won't be re-released. Sorry.

As for the new version "not making it any time soon" . . . I know it's been a long time since the first release, but it's not much longer to wait now. The target release date is by the end of Fall this year, and so far chances of that happening look pretty good. So you're looking at 2-3 months from now.

Aside from the usual reasons for things taking so long (lack of spare time, personal emergencies, etc.), the main reason is because some of the new features and fixes took a lot of research and trial and error in order to get them to work. For example, doing proper widescreen where EVERYTHING is fixed (menus, HUD, cutscenes) and looks its best at each aspect ratio, wasn't easy.

@TRON.dll: I see now what you probably meant by new weapons. The weapons added to Derez are new to Derez mode, but not to the game. They're not completely new. I'd still like to try getting the weapons from Xbox Killer App into the Killer App mod on the PC, though.

My internet connection was fixed today. Huzzah. Now I've got a ton of catching up to do.

In the meantime, I've added a couple more videos online showing Killer App mod widescreen fixes in action:

    Cutscene before and after
    Widescreen gameplay

It's nothing too exciting, so I'm not posting these as part of another news update. I'll have something more interesting to show in the next couple of weeks, and I'll post an update then.

will there be widescreen support in the mod? i play on a widescreen pc and i hate playing with a streched image.
  9. TronFAQ September 12, 2009 4:11 PM
Yes, full proper widescreen support is a major feature in the next version of the mod. As has already been stated in this article and shown in the videos.

That part of the mod is probably 99% complete at this point. But I'm still tweaking it, to see if it can be improved just that bit more.

Really looking forward to this mod, both for widescreen support and Gold cheats.

you should have a multiplayer mode that supports more than one type of gameplay, that would be awesome

    Hi Faq!
Any new info on the update to this? I was looking for a copy of the old one and couldn't find it.
  13. TronFAQ November 18, 2009 11:58 PM
Yeah, the old version was withdrawn and isn't available any more.

The new version will be released within the next couple of months. There's not too much left to do. It's just a matter of finding free time to work on it.
  14. Anonymous December 07, 2009 1:46 PM
"next couple of months"... does this mean "one or two" or "whenever we get around to do it, be it in ten years hence", which would be a bigger couple of months? ;-)

keep up the good work --- and if you don't get it done by, say, June '10, please re-release the older version. I'm itching to play it :-)
  15. TronFAQ December 08, 2009 9:04 PM
I can't say for sure when it will be done, but I can say that it won't take that long.

You'll see another update about the mod's status within the next month, showing off some more new features. Trust me, it's close to another release.

Here's a little something, just to show continued progress on the mod.

This isn't the full update I promised in my previous comment. I'll have more to show and talk about later this month.

I updated the TRON Wiki with some new details about the upcoming v1.1 of the mod.
