TRON 2.0 Released On GOG.com

TRON 2.0 has been released on GOG.com today, at an introductory price of $9.99 USD!

I had already speculated that the game would be showing up there soon, a few months ago. Based on some datamining that someone did of the GOG site. It arrived a bit later than expected (December instead of October), but it’s here!

Right now, I have no idea how well all the mods for TRON 2.0 will work with the GOG version of the game. (Someone posted in the GOG forum that supposedly the Killer App Mod works fine with the GOG version.)

Regardless, I’ll test all the mods and see how they work with it. And make any adjustments to make mods work better with it, if necessary. (GOG did not contact LDSO or give me a heads-up about this release, in any way.)

Right now it doesn’t include any extras like GOG games usually do (wallpapers, soundtrack, etc.), but if GOG is willing to work with me I may be able to provide some rare extras (if they can’t source enough from Disney).

March 21st, 2017 UPDATE: I'm late in adding this, but I wanted to mention that thanks to PaulTheTall and his ThePortingKit project, it's possible to quite easily play the GOG Windows version of TRON 2.0 on OSX/MacOS on a Mac.

I've also since tested all the existing TRON 2.0 mods with the GOG version of TRON 2.0, and posted my results on the GOG.com forum here. The short answer is that, yes, they all work without needing any updates.

TRON RUN/r Mac, Linux, SteamOS Versions Cancelled

Afraid I’ve got a bit of bad news. It looks like the Mac/Linux/SteamOS versions of TRON RUN/r have been cancelled.

Development on these versions were already well underway, not long after the release of the Windows version of the game on Steam. They briefly became available on the Steam store page (for one day) back in March 2016, but were then quickly pulled. (Note the Apple and Linux/SteamOS logos on the archived store page.)

Updates to the Mac/Linux/SteamOS versions continued behind the scenes until May 2016, but then stopped. So from June until now (October 2016) there were no updates at all.

However, a few days ago another update occurred. They were removed according to SteamDB, and are no longer considered supported versions of the game.

Something else I’ve noticed, is that development on the Windows version of the game stopped in July after the Outlands DLC was released. So no updates for the last two months. Prior to this, TRON RUN/r was constantly being updated behind the scenes. But it might be jumping the gun to say that there may be no more updates or new DLC, so I’ll keep an eye out to see if the situation changes.

Oh My Disney Article Reveals Daft Punk Tracks Not Used In TRON Legacy

The Disney owned site Oh My Disney revealed how they convinced Daft Punk to do the soundtrack for TRON Legacy.

I always thought it was director Joseph Kosinski who wanted them. But it turns out that it was Disney themselves, long before Kosinski was brought on board or even a single frame of film was shot.

Also, there was a collaboration between Daft Punk and Jay-Z on one song meant for TRON Legacy, but it wasn’t used in the film and wasn’t officially released. The song leaked online a couple of years ago, however.

Another really interesting revelation is that Daft Punk composed a lot more music for TRON Legacy — that, again, ended up not being used — and is yet to be released in any form. (However, these were considered “temp” tracks. Daft Punk may have felt they were not up to the standard of the others.)

My TRON 2.0 Review For The CRPG Book Project

I've mentioned working on this before, but it’s finally done and has been accepted. My review of TRON 2.0 for the CRPG Book project!


Doing the review has had an impact on the amount of time I could spend working on mod projects, up until now. (Part of why the next version of the Killer App Mod is taking so long.) But there was simply no way I could turn down the offer to write it. :)

I felt it was an extremely important opportunity, especially since my review will be in the same company as those written by people who are luminaries in game development or the gaming press. Such as Chris Avellone (Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas), Peter “Durante” Thoman (of DSFix fame), George Weidman (Super Bunnyhop), Jason Scott (Internet Archive), and more.

I want to thank the curator/editor of the book, Felipe Pepe, for being patient with me. It took a long time to write, and I kept making endless revisions to the review. (Which was originally much longer, but had to be edited down to fit into two pages. So I had to pick and choose, which points about the game were the most important to address.)

TRON Evolution PC Multiplayer Map Pack #1 DLC Download

Took a break from modding TRON 2.0, to turn my attention to TRON Evolution for a moment.

If you bought the Retail DVD version of TRON Evolution for PC, it came with a code that let you download two additional Multiplayer maps for free. For some reason (in a typical display of Disney Interactive’s wisdom), these maps were not included with the Steam version of TRON Evolution.

GFWL (Games for Windows Live) still works, and you can play Multiplayer online with other players, no problem. But these maps can no longer be downloaded from GFWL via the code, even on the Retail DVD version. Great, huh?

Well, fret not. Since anyone who bought the game at release was entitled to these two maps for free, I have no qualms about making these available again. (Besides, without the game this DLC is pretty useless.)

TRON Evolution Multiplayer Map Pack #1 DLC Download

After you run the installer, you’ll have two additional Multiplayer maps in TRON Evolution. Codestream Nexus and User’s Plaza. This installer should work for either the Retail DVD or Steam version of the game.

I’d like to thank my pal Parallax Abstraction for helping me test the map installer. The maps showed up for him in-game, and we played a few matches. These maps did indeed seem to be working correctly in terms of game mechanics and scoring, as far as we could tell.

The only thing I’m definitely not certain about, is whether this installer will work for people who are playing TRON Evolution in a language other than English. It should work. But, I can’t 100% guarantee that. Everyone let me know if you have any issues with the installer.

TRON RUN/r Game Full Release On Februrary 16, 2016 - Coming To PS4 And XB1 As Well

Disney Games just released a trailer stating what we already knew for months: that what became TRON RUN/r, would also be released on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One consoles. (I can also see the game ending up on mobile devices, like the iPad.)

The game has been available for PC on Steam in Early Access, for almost two months, in an incomplete form for $10. But now we've learned that the complete game will be released on February 16, 2016 at $20.

A page on the Disney Games web site reveals there will be 32 levels in total, and some sort of multiplayer functionality called Stream mode (though it's not clear if this is one-on-one head-on, or simply leaderboards). In addition to what's already there in the Steam Early Access version (running on foot doing Disc battles, and Light Cycle racing). There will also be sections where you grind on rails and battle Light Tanks, and most likely Light Runner racing (the vehicle that Quorra drove in TRON Legacy).

Much of the new content coming to the full release was already uncovered by myself a month ago, in a couple of posts — Post 1 and Post 2 — on tumblr.

January 27th UPDATE 1: A written article and video from IGN seems to confirm that despite the earlier rumored involvement of Skrillex for the TRON RUN/r soundtrack, he did not end up contributing. The video also confirms that those who buy the Steam Early Access version of TRON RUN/r for $10 will get the full game (as per the official Steam Early Access policy), instead of the $20 being charged for the console releases.

February 1st UPDATE 2: According to the Steam discussion forums, where someone has said he was able to play the February 16, 2016 release of TRON RUN/r at PAX South, the Stream mode where you can "challenge friends" is just racing separately and comparing scores on a leaderboard. Not proper player vs. player (PvP) competition. Rather disappointing news.

Also, the Light Runner and new characters I discovered hidden in the Steam Early Access version of the game will apparently not be there for the Feb. 16th release. It looks like they will arrive later, as DLC. There are also supposed to be more Companions (those floating assistants that look like a Bit, or Byte) in the future. On the plus side, there is now a female counterpart character you can play as, and you can change your character's color.

Note that these latest details are all second-hand, unconfirmed information, though. So let's wait and see what the situation is when the game actually releases.

March 19th UPDATE 3: It looks like TRON RUN/r is getting Linux and Mac versions. The Linux version will probably also work on Valve’s SteamOS.


The Linux/Mac ports are apparently being handled by Tin Giant Games.

March 22nd UPDATE 5: The Mac and Linux/SteamOS versions have been temporarily removed from the TRON RUN/r store page.

But you can clearly see the Mac, Linux/SteamOS, and SteamPlay logos on this archived version of the store page.

The Mac and Linux/SteamOS versions will return, but why did they go live if they weren't ready yet?

TRON Roller Coaster Was Originally Planned For United States, May Still Appear There Someday

Today I stumbled across a very illuminating report published by the California Polytechnic State University, shared under Digital Commons. Which is a way of promoting free access to content and information.

It seems that the Walt Disney Imagineering team, responsible for the rides and attractions at Disney’s theme parks, decided to add their report about the TRON Roller Coaster’s early planning and design to the University’s digital archive, and the University has now shared it with the public.

The coaster was originally called TRON 2.0: The Experience, hinting at how long it’s been in development. I’ve only skimmed through the lengthy, very technical document the Imagineering team published. But key takeaways are the following.

  • The coaster was tentatively proposed to first be built in Magic Kingdom Florida, becoming part of the Autopia attraction. With a possibility of it also being built at Disneyland in California. Obviously, plans changed. The upcoming Disneyland Shanghai park in China got the coaster first. Interestingly, the U.S. design differs quite a bit compared to what we're seeing from the China design.

  • Three possible designs were proposed. Light Plane (sic) aka Light Jet, Light Car (sic) aka Light Runner, and Suspended Rail. The Light Car/Runner design was ultimately chosen. Though, it apparently changed to Light Cycles for the Shanghai coaster.

  • The report hints that a TRON Roller Coaster may still be built in the U.S. eventually, but China was clearly selected to be first.

    “... plans for a TRON-themed roller coaster were announced during the summer of 2015 in preparation of the new Disneyland Shanghai theme park. This further confirmed the notion that TRON could work as a marketable subject for WDI to install seamlessly into one of its theme parks.”

    In other words, the Coaster in Shanghai paves the way for further development at another location, in the future.

July 16th UPDATE: There is now a rumor circulating that a TRON roller coaster — similar to the Light Cycle coaster in Disneyland Shanghai — will be built to replace the Body Wars ride in the closed down Wonders of Life Pavilion, at EPCOT's Future World in Disney World Florida. Florida was the Disney Imagineering planning document's proposed first pick, as a location for building a TRON roller coaster in the United States.

March 21st, 2017 UPDATE: So, I have no idea how accurate this source of news is. But based on the source’s Twitter timeline, it seems pretty legit. (Thanks to UnitedTronArmy for making me aware of it!)


This individual is stating that the Tomorrowland Speedway ride – at Magic Kingdom, in Walt Disney World Florida – may be replaced by a TRON roller coaster, by the 50th Anniversary of the park. Which would be in 2021.

It’s also stated that whether or not the coaster is built, depends on reception of a TRON 3 film. Huh.

This lines up with earlier information, that always places the coaster as being built at WDW in Florida. In fact, this latest rumor places the coaster almost exactly where the info I had in this article, over a year ago, said it would be.

TR2N Liberation - A TRON Legacy Game (Cancelled) That Was In Development Before TRON Evolution

Shortly after the TRON Legacy teaser trailer debuted at the 2008 San Diego Comicon, it turns out that Disney put out the word to game developers, that they wanted to see their pitches for a game based on the upcoming TRON Legacy sequel film.

Which is surprising to me, considering that — at that point — Disney was in the process of expanding their Disney Interactive Studios division considerably, and had started or acquired multiple game studios already. (They've since closed many of those studios, and scaled back their ambitions in a dramatic fashion.)

Nevertheless, Day 1 Studios (now a division of Wargaming, the company that created the game World of Tanks) stepped forward and created a prototype game with the working title of TR2N Liberation. (Since the title for the sequel hadn't been decided yet, at that point in 2008, it was still being referred to as TR2N.)

Footage of the prototype can be seen in the video below. It was clearly in a very early stage, and apparently done in only a few weeks. You could race against an opponent Light Cycle on a track, and later do simple Disc combat against that same opponent. (It's not clear whether the opponent was meant to only be controlled by another player, or could be an AI to create a Single Player experience for both game modes. Though probably the former, due to the lack of time Disney afforded development.)

After seeing the footage, it seems to me that the recently announced TRON RUN/r game on Steam is going to be very similar in a number of ways, and may have actually borrowed ideas from this unreleased prototype.

Ultimately, Disney decided to give the TRON Legacy video game project to Propaganda Games, and we got TRON Evolution instead. (Very likely because Disney happened to own Propaganda.)

There would have been a certain irony if Day 1 Studios had been the company responsible for a TRON Legacy game. When Monolith Productions was unable to commit to the development of F.E.A.R. 3 — another follow-up to their successful F.E.A.R. series of games — Day 1 Studios took over and developed F.E.A.R. 3. History would have repeated itself, if Day 1 Studios had developed the next TRON game after Monolith Productions.
